Athletic Entrepreneur — ISSUE 164
Living in China.
Scrolling through social media, I came across something that stopped me.
An African-American father living in China.
A former college basketball player, with his 10-year-old daughter.
For the past six years, they’ve built a life together overseas, and he’s been documenting their journey—not just in the gym, but in everyday life.
She’s already training as a basketball player. Learning discipline. Learning Mandarin, Building confidence. Developing skills.
But something else caught my attention.
She already has more than 2,000 Instagram followers.
Most people see a child posting basketball videos.
I see a father who understands where youth sports are headed.
He understands the assignment.
In the NIL era, athletic ability alone isn’t enough.
Your story matters.
Your personality matters.
Your consistency matters.
Your community matters.
The days of waiting until high school—or worse, college—to think about personal branding are disappearing. College tuition continues to rise. Student debt remains a burden for millions of families. Academic scholarships and athletic scholarships have never been more valuable.
NIL has created another opportunity.

The NIL Athlete Business Playbook —
The playbook every NIL-eligible athlete should read before signing their first deal — contracts, valuation, taxes, brand building.

Thank you for supporting NIL education!
Not every athlete will earn life-changing money, but every athlete has the opportunity to build visibility, credibility, and relationships that didn’t exist a decade ago.
The smartest parents aren’t just investing in private coaching or tournaments.
They’re helping their children build a digital footprint that reflects who they are.
What impressed me most wasn’t the basketball.
It was the balance.
The father doesn’t only post workouts.
He shares family moments.
Their adventures around China.
The laughter.
The travel.
The meals.
The conversations.
That’s what brands connect with.
People don’t follow perfect athletes.
They follow authentic stories.
Sponsors don’t just invest in jump shots.
They invest in people audiences know, trust, and enjoy watching.
That’s exactly what this father is creating.
Without forcing it.
Without turning childhood into a marketing campaign.
Just documenting life.
The irony is that many parents still think social media is simply entertainment.
The best parents are beginning to understand it’s also documentation.
A living portfolio.
A timeline of growth.
A story that compounds over time.
Will every young athlete land a major NIL deal?
No.
But every athlete who starts early gives themselves more opportunities than the athlete who waits until college to introduce themselves to the world.
This father and daughter remind us that building a brand doesn’t begin when a recruiter calls.
It begins with consistency.
With storytelling.
With shared experiences.
With family.
Because in the NIL era, the athletes who stand out won’t just have highlights.
They’ll have a story people have been following all along.
