Your quarterback threw three touchdowns?
No, he didn’t.
Not by himself.
Before the ball left his hand, Carter (@nicunscripted son) identified the front, picked up the stunt, anchored against a bull rush and kept 250 pounds of bad intentions out of the pocket.
Then the quarterback got the statistic. The receiver got the highlight.
The running back got the interview. And my son, Carter? He got asked: “Did you make any plays?” Are you fu*king serious?
He made the pocket. He opened the running lane. He picked up the blitz. He kept the drive alive. Carter made all those plays possible. That was the play.
THE SCAM OF BEING A LINEMAN PARENT
Your child can dominate from snap to whistle, but because he never carried the ball across the goal line, half the stadium thinks he did nothing.
The camera follows the ball. The announcer follows the ball. The box score follows the ball. But football starts at the line of scrimmage.
That 150-yard rushing game? Somebody moved bodies.
Those three touchdown passes? Somebody kept the pocket clean.
That game-winning drive? Somebody fought through swollen hands and bruised ribs to stop another grown man from blowing it up.
The lineman’s best work appears in somebody else’s statistics.
Toney threw down a monster dunk and the internet exploded. Teammates celebrated. Friends went crazy. Then the clip reached a room full of brand executives.

Win 55 snaps and nobody says your name.
Lose one and everybody sees it.
No applause when the protection holds.
Instant blame when the pocket collapses.
That is life in the trenches.
The defensive end didn’t get home.
The linebacker never entered the gap.
The defensive tackle disappeared.
No sack. No pressure. No tackle for loss.
Nothing happened—because the lineman made damn sure nothing happened.
He didn’t fail to make a play.
He erased somebody else’s ability to make one.
AND NOW THAT INVISIBILITY COSTS MONEY
Quarterbacks, receivers and running backs produce highlights the internet understands immediately.
Great line play happens in two violent seconds inside a pile of bodies. You have to slow down the film and understand the assignment to appreciate it.
That makes linemen harder to package in the attention economy—and easier to overlook in recruiting, media coverage and NIL.
The work isn’t less valuable.
The value is hidden from people trained to chase the football.
So post the pancake.
Show the protection pickup.
Replay the pulling guard who opened the touchdown lane.
Teach people to watch football—not just the football.
And the next time somebody asks, “Did Carter make any plays?”
Tell them the truth:
Carter made the whole damn offense possible.
“NO SHINE WITHOUT THE LINE.”
